WSD Adopts New Calendars for the Next Two School Years

WSD Adopts New Calendars for the Next Two School Years

On February 28, 2023, The Woodburn School Board of Directors adopted the 2023-24 and 2024-25 academic calendars. This year WSD elected to adopt the next two years, in order for people to be able to plan their time away from school better as well as be able to facilitate some school operations (including forecasting student schedules and hiring staff).

The district had proposed three options (for each school year) and gathered input from staff, families, and community members using a Google Form Survey sent via School Messenger, S’more, Facebook, and email. Additionally, there were paper surveys available at all schools.

The committee reviewed input from all constituents prior to recommending the two calendars to the board. The option approved includes a school start date before Labor Day (as has been done here the last several years) in order not to push the school year too far into late June.

Key changes to our new calendars

There will no longer be late starts every Wednesday. Instead, WSD has consolidated a similar amount of time monthly on one day. That day will not have students present, and staff will be able to work together to provide professional development, PLC time, district job-alike meetings (grade level or subject level, etc), and time to practice the applications of what they learn. These have been placed on one Monday a month, on most months.
Another change is to convert some of the time during the week of Thanksgiving, where students will still have the full week off, and we propose to run a local Woodburn professional learning conference for our staff, with opportunities for them to choose sessions to learn from each other and from outside experts during those two days.
