Woodburn High School has a unique structure - Four small high schools of choice with a fifth alternative high school for upperclassmen who need support. The small school structure has led to increased graduation rates that exceed the state average. The Oregon Small Schools Initiative, or OSSI, was designed to take schools’ performance in a direction that increased graduation and college readiness among all students, especially those traditionally underserved.
Writers in the Schools (WITS) has served public high school students with creative writing residencies in Portland, and more recently Gresham and Woodburn, since 1996. Published local writers collaborate with classroom teachers to lead an immersive semester-long workshop series designed to further class themes, curricula, and student interests.
Each residency culminates with a public reading, ordinarily held in a local café or bookstore. With distance learning, we look forward to hosting our reading on Zoom and invite you to join us in celebrating these students and their work.
This end-of-residency reading will feature students who worked with WITS writers CJ Wiggan and Carolina Gómez-Montoya.
