Health Materials Update

High School

After developing a scoring rubric based off of the state requirements and teachers’ instructional needs and an initial review of available textbooks, Health teachers at the high school level selected Goodheart-Wilcox publisher’s text: Comprehensive Health, 2nd Edition.  This program includes online and print books in English and Spanish, a student work book, a companion website where students can view instructional videos, complete assignments, and practice their new skills and knowledge via online quizzes, flashcards, and activities.

Middle School

Representative teachers from the Middle School level have been working hard to identify the right materials to meet the needs of their students and support their instruction.  After careful consideration, they decided to pilot the middle school version of the text that the HS selected.  The newest of the books they reviewed, the Goodheart-Willcox text: Comprehensive Health Skills for Middle School: 1st edition, has a 2019 publish date.  Because this book was developed after the cutoff for state review, it was not submitted for review to Oregon Department of Education. However, with district support, representative health teachers have analyzed and piloted the materials and have found it to meet the state requirements, depicted in the state’s Adoption Criteria of Instructional Materials in Health Education.   Like the HS program, these materials include online and print books in English and Spanish, a student work book, a companion website where students can view instructional videos, complete assignments, and practice their new skills and knowledge via online quizzes, flashcards, and activities. The team is also exploring the use of supplemental materials like Choices magazine and Brainpop.com to provide students with multiple types of learning experiences to access and practice content and skills.

Elementary

At the elementary level, various school personnel are working together to determine how to seamlessly weave health instruction that supports’ students development of health knowledge and skills, as well as social emotional supports into their school day. The Great Body Shop supports this integrated approach through their student-friendly magazines in English and Spanish that are designed to be used instructionally at school and taken home to share as a resource.
