  • Principal's Message

    Principal's Message

It has been 17 years since my arrival to Oregon from Chile, my country of birth.

Because Spanish is my native language, I have had the honor of living and experiencing both, the importance of being bilingual in present days, and also the excitement and self-appreciation that comes along with learning a new language and culture.

After graduating from Portland State University, I was offered my first job as an educator here in Woodburn as a 4th grade dual Spanish teacher at Heritage Elementary. After two amazing years there, I had the opportunity of teaching 6th-8th Mathematics at Valor Middle School for four great years. During that last year, I completed my Masters in Educational Leadership and Policy at PSU.

This gave me the possibility to work as an educational consultant for a year at Atlas in Portland. Later in 2016, I was blessed enough to become the Assistant Principal of Nellie Muir Elementary. I could not be happier to come back to Woodburn whose community has a very special place in my heart. Now, after two years as Assistant Principal, I was given the great pleasure to be the School Principal of this wonderful School.

I believe that creating strong bonds with our families and community members is key to ensure student learning. It is imperative that we can all learn from each other in order to become a better community and build a safe and comfortable learning environment for our kids.  Like in every school in Woodburn, student learning is first and because of it, all decisions are driven by it. I can assure you that at Nellie Muir everyone contributes to creating the school that everyone wants and deserves.

We have an outstanding staff that leads by example and provides all students with a safe, nurturing environment that allows them to take risks and truly become contributing citizens for the world.

From our After School Program, to our school garden and SMART program; from our focus on IB Attitudes and Attributes to our Professional Learning Communities; from our 1:1 technology in Kinder-5th grade to our “Baile Folklórico y Jaranas” -- this is a VERY special place in which everyone believes that all students can learn and develop in a warm and caring environment.

Once a Lion Always a Lion!

    Mensaje Del Director

Oscar Belanger, Director, Escuela Primaria Nellie Muir
