BAAC Meets to Provide Oversight on Outstanding Construction Projects
The Bond Advisory Accountability Committee for Woodburn School District met on May 8, 2019 to review outstanding projects to be completed at French Prairie and Valor Middle Schools, Nellie Muir, Heritage, and Lincoln Elementary Schools. Voters approved the $65 million bond to finance construction, repair, renovate and improve schools and facilities in May 2015. Construction projects were scheduled over a five-year timeline that will conclude in 2020.
The Bond Advisory Accountability Committee (BAAC) was established in 2015 to monitor the progress of bond projects and provide regular updates to the school board and community. The BAAC supports Woodburn School District’s goals of accountability and transparency to make sure tax dollars are spent wisely as bond projects are completed. The BAAC has reviewed projects as they have developed amid rising construction costs and advised on necessary adjustments to keep the budget in line and fulfill the commitment to the community.
Bids are currently out for the classroom expansion at Valor Middle School. Construction is expected to start next month and be completed in July 2020. At French Prairie Middle School, the library and classroom renovations will get underway this month, as well as some material abatement, and is scheduled to be completed in time for the start of the 2019-2020 class year. Nellie Muir Elementary School’s roof replacement will begin this summer, also. The classroom expansion at Nellie Muir is one of three final projects that is still in the planning and land-use approval process. These include additional classroom space at Nellie Muir, Heritage, and Lincoln Elementary Schools. Site plans for all five schools are available on the District’s bond project page or Facebook album.
The voter-approved bond funded the new Success High School, which includes a solar array on campus to make the building net-zero for energy consumption, thereby lowering the operating costs. Major maintenance and tech/security improvements, such as roof replacements, new windows, and secure entries, have already been completed to the existing buildings at Nellie Muir, Heritage and Lincoln Elementary Schools and French Prairie Middle School. A new classroom building, gymnasium and covered play area was built at Washington Elementary. The District was able to buy and renovate an existing building in Woodburn to house the Welcome Center and District Office. Safety improvements have been made on the Woodburn High School campus, which incorporated a sprinkler system building-wide.
The District maintains a page dedicated to bond-funded projects on its website, and provides direct emails updates on progress to those that are interested. Please visit www.woodburnsd.org/bond_updates for more information.
