A couple of students from the Woodburn Arts and Communications Academy (WACA) and two more from Valor Middle School (VMS) traveled with Portland Youth Philharmonic’s Wind Ensemble (PYWE) to Canby to perform outreach concerts at Eccles Elementary and Baker Prairie Middle School on Wednesday, April 17, 2019.
“Together Adriana Loera and Nicholas Pajela (WACA), and Aaron Andrade and Samuel Sweet (VMS) make up a cadre of Woodburn School District students who participate in the Portland Youth Philharmonic’s Wind Ensemble,” said VMS Director of Bands and Choirs, Jason Rodgers in a letter to Woodburn School District Superintendent, Chuck Ramson. “Here at Valor, we have been fortunate to have worked with PYP over the past 14 years to bring several of these visits to our school.”
Rodgers mentioned that participating in the Portland Youth Harmonic (PYP) has increased VMS student participation over the past 14 years.
“The participation of our four excellent musicians is evidence that the PYPs mission has succeeded,” said Rodgers.
In a recent video interview by PYP, Rodgers shared that he sees music as uplifting and transformational.
“It is transformational, not only on a personal level but on a social level, on a social economic level, on an intellectual level,” said Rodgers. “It is a universal language that brings us all together. We just have to have more of it.”
