A Woodburn School District’s After School Club coordinator was recently selected as a Next Generation Leader through the National Afterschool Association.
Ayanna Zamora, After School Coordinator, was nominated by Beth Unverzagt, OregonASK Director, who said she was impressed with her dedication to the program.
“The award is from the National Afterschool Association,” said Unverzagt. “They collect nominations from around the country and then 30 people are chosen [as Next Generation Leaders].”
Zamora was one of the thirty chosen to receive this award and she will be recognized at the National Afterschool Association annual conference held in New York.
A few members from the WSD After School Club will accompany Zamora to the event, on the weekend of March 15, 2019, where she will receive her award and recognition for her work with the After School Club.
“I’ve been so impressed with her willingness to learn,” said Unverzagt. “She is very professional and she loves her job. And it is very clear how much she loves her job.”
Zamora first heard of the After School Club during her junior year at Woodburn High School when her brother worked for the organization. She applied and was hired as a recreational leader and immediately realized that working for this organization was something she really enjoyed.
Zamora said that the After School Club is her passion and that she really enjoys being able to support kids after school.
“We build a lot of relationship with parents and the students afterschool, and we make sure that they are having a great time,” she said. “It makes me happy when I hear that students don’t want to be picked up early. It makes me happy that we provide a safe and fun place for kids afterschool.”
Unverzagt said that one of the most important things she saw in Ayanna was her willingness to partner with both the community and with families.
“When you are with her, she is really with you,” said Unverzagt. “She is listening to the needs of the families and she is the same way with children.”
“The Woodburn Afterschool Club is proud of the recognition of Ayanna Zamora by the National Afterschool Association as one of the 2019 Next Generation of Afterschool Leaders,” said Instructional Services Coordinator, Stephan Price. “Ayanna Zamora demonstrates the traits of a lifelong learner daily, bringing intelligence, dedication and experience to our daily work.”
