The Woodburn School District announced administrative changes within the organization for the 2017-2018 school year. Five school district employees will assume new roles in the fall when schools reopen. Three other administrative positions have been filled by candidates from outside the district. One position is being filled by an administrator who is returning to the school district after time with the Oregon Department of Education.
Washington Elementary School
Alfredo Belanger will be the new Principal at Washington. Belanger comes from Portland Public where he has served as an Assistant Principal for the past two years. Prior to that, he spent time with Tigard Tualatin as an ELL/Bilingual Teacher, Spanish Teacher, and AVID/Intercambio Program Coordinator.
Claudia Kis will be the Assistant Principal at Washington. Kis has been with the Woodburn School District since 2005. She started her career as a 3rd grade Bilingual Teacher. In 2008, Kis became an Instructional Coach for other teachers. Most recently, she has served as the New Teacher Mentor Coordinator for the school district.
Heritage Elementary School
Greg Baisch will serve as the Co-Principal of Heritage with current Co-Principal, Sherrilynn Rawson.
Baisch has had a long administrative career in Woodburn: Athletic Director, Assistant Principal at Heritage Elementary and most recently Principal of Woodburn Arts and Communications Academy at the high school.
Teresa Alfaro will serve as Heritage’s Assistant Principal. Alfaro comes to us from Salem-Keizer. She started her career as an Instructional Assistant there in 2004. She then moved into the classroom as a bilingual/ESOL K-5 teacher. Most recently Alfaro has served as the English Language Acquisition Specialist and as the Bilingual Resources Program Associate.
Woodburn High School
The Woodburn High School follows the small schools model, and is comprised of five academies: the Academy of International Studies, the Wellness Business and Sports School, the Woodburn Arts and Communications Academy, the Woodburn Academy of Art, Science and Technology, and Success Alternative High School.
Juan Larios will serve as Principal for the Academy of International Studies. Larios was most recently the Principal at Washington Elementary School. Prior to that, he has served as a dual language teacher in the school district.
Joe Jensen will become the Principal for the Wellness Business and Sports School. He has worked for the school district since 2003, most recently as a teacher at the high school. He also serves as Coordinator for the International Baccalaureate and Advanced Placement programs at the school district.
Desiree Kiesel will serve as Principal for Woodburn Arts and Communications Academy. Kiesel previously served as teacher leader at the academy. She left to take an administrative position at a neighboring school district, and most recently has been with the Oregon Department of Education.
Christina Chapman will serve as a Program Coordinator at the District Office. She started her career as an ESL and Spanish teacher before transitioning to administration. She has served as an Elementary Principal, Title III Program Coordinator, and most recently served as the Federal Programs Coordinator for the Salem-Keizer School District.
Eric Swenson brings many years of administrative experience to his new role as Program Coordinator at the District Office. He comes to this position after serving as an administrator in the district at all levels, most recently as Principal for the Wellness Business and Sports School.
