Welcome back to school! All of us look forward to this time of year to reconnect with our students and community.
The Woodburn School District is receiving a significant amount of attention for the success we are having closing the achievement gap between different student groups. The Oregon State Board of Education held their monthly meeting on our campus, and toured classrooms to see how our bilingual program was contributing to high graduation rates. The board sets educational policies and standards for Oregon’s 197 public school districts, and 20 educational service districts. We have been asked to serve on several panels to share what we have learned from our success in Woodburn with other Oregon public schools.
I also want to let you know that we are making good progress on our construction projects. Voters approved a bond in 2015 to fund additional space for students, major repairs and maintenance to our schools and improvements to security/technology systems. Construction is well underway on the two-story addition at Washington Elementary. We’ve been able to secure a $3 million grant for seismic upgrades for both Washington and Lincoln elementary schools. Classrooms that were fire damaged are being renovated at the high school, a project funded with insurance payments. A sprinkler system will be installed in the high school for safety. Heritage and Valor have a new roof. And Success High School is expected to break ground soon.
Another important project for the Woodburn School District this year is to update our five-year Strategic Plan. This is a significant effort involving stakeholders from the district, students, business and community. The Strategic Plan serves as the backbone for our policy making decisions, and we hope that you will take part.
