HS Sweethearts: Gustavo Vela-Moreno & Alma Vela
Gustavo Vela-Moreno and Alma Vela—both 2009 graduates of Woodburn High School—went on to study together at George Fox University before getting married. The couple always hoped to return to Woodburn to settle down as both of their families are in the community.
A 2009 graduate of the Academy of International Studies, Gustavo went on to study at Stanford and receive a master’s degree in civil and environmental engineering after earning his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering at George Fox University. He has enjoyed following the news of his high school alma mater and is proud of recent and current students’ successes and achievements. It was an opportunity for him and his wife to return home when he was hired as an engineer by Marion County in 2016.
Also a graduate of AIS, Alma earned a bachelor degree from George Fox University in elementary education. Following graduation she taught Kindergarten and first grade for two years in East Palo Alto while Gustavo was studying at Stanford. Since returning to Woodburn in 2016, she has taught first grade at Washington Elementary. She enjoys the support of fellow teachers and the community that share the desire to see students thrive. When she was still in high school one of things that was instilled in her was the value of working to serve your community— and she’s pleased to be able to come back to Woodburn and do so.
The couple enjoyed exploring during their time in California, and now look forward to delving into areas surrounding their hometown. They also like to dream of ways that they can give back to Woodburn and how they can help their community in their spare time.
