WSD Bond Update - January 9, 2018

In May 2015, the Woodburn community approved a $65 million bond. We continue to make progress on bond-funded projects to add space for students, make major repairs to maintain our schools, and improve security/technology systems. These proposed projects are scheduled along a 5-year timeline (2015-2020) for completion.

2018: A Year In Review

Happy New Year! 2018 has come to an end, and we’re looking ahead to 2019! It’s a good time to take a pause and reflect on all that has been completed this last year.  We’re over half-way through our timeline for bond –funded projects, and a lot was accomplished in 2018.  A new Success High School and a major addition at Washington Elementary were big projects.  The final phase of the Woodburn High School sprinkler project was finished during the Summer Break, as well as major maintenance and tech/security improvements at Nellie Muir and Lincoln Elementary Schools and French Prairie Middle School.

Success High School

The high school building for the Success High School was opened for the 2018-19 school year. It was built adjacent to the Welcome Center/District Office on Meridian Drive. The community was invited to a celebration and Grand Opening on Thursday, September 27, 2018 at 6:30 p.m. The Success High School site includes a solar array that provides power for the school, as well as educational opportunities. The school is a net-zero for energy consumption, meaning it produces more energy that it uses. You can view the solar output at an online kiosk to track energy produced by day, week, month, year or lifetime! View the kiosk at http://kiosk.datareadings.com/GjgTn4Se/overview?granularity=month.

 Washington Elementary

Construction of a 2-story addition, as well as a gymnasium, and covered play area were completed for the start of the 2018-19 school year. A new kitchen was added in the old gymnasium area, as well as extra parking and a bus lane.

The construction project included a 2-story addition providing 14 additional classrooms. A new gymnasium was constructed along with a covered play area. The former gym was converted to a cafeteria, and a new library was constructed. Safety and technology upgrades were made to the existing school building. The School District also received a grant that funded seismic upgrades to the existing Washington and Lincoln Elementary buildings. Bathrooms throughout Washington were made accessible to all. The site also includes a new bus turn-around with additional staff parking, as well as underground water lines and access roads for fire department.

The new classroom building was ready for the use of students and staff in September for the 2018-19 school year. The final stage of the project was the removal of the portables that provided classroom space in previous years. An Open House was recently held on December 18 to celebrate the re-opening of Washington Elementary.
